A true Southern woman who knows that any cook worth her gumbo always starts with a roux and who never wears white after Labor Day, Christa weaves stories of unscripted grace with threads of hope, humor, and heart. Her debut women’s fiction, Walking on Broken Glass, is published by Abingdon Press. She contributes to Exemplify and Afictionado, the e-zine of American Christian Fiction Writers. Her essays have been published in Chicken Soup for the Coffee Lover’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Divorced and Recovering Soul, Cup of Comfort, and The Ultimate Teacher. Christa is the mother of five adult children, a grandmother of three, and a teacher of high school English. She and her husband Ken live in Abita Springs, Louisiana, where they and their three cats enjoy their time playing golf, anticipating retirement, and dodging hurricanes. Christa Allan will be on a virtual book tour with Pump Up Your Book Promotion Virtual Book Tours in March and is here with us today to give her impression of virtual book tours and online book marketing.
Thank you for this interview, Christa. Can we start out by having you tell us briefly what your new book is about?
Christa: Leah Thorton’s life, like her Southern Living home, has great curb appeal. But a paralyzing encounter with a can of frozen apple juice in the supermarket shatters the façade, forcing her to admit that all is not as it appears. When her best friend gets in Leah’s face about her reliance on alcohol to avoid dealing with her life, Leah must make an agonizing choice. Seek help against her husband’s wishes? Or—put herself first for once?
Joy and sadness converge and unwelcome insights intrude, testing Leah’s commitment to sobriety, her marriage, her motherhood, and her faith. Narrated by Leah, this novel starts with a funny yet tragic epiphany, setting the stage for a story dealing with difficult circumstances with dry humor. While the topics are serious, they’re approached with Leah’s sometimes sassy, often sarcastic, usually self-deprecating humor.
More and more authors are realizing the potential for sales that derives from virtual book tours. Can you tell us your personal reasons why you chose a virtual book tour to help get the word out about your new book?
Christa: What I find both amazing and exciting about virtual book tours is the opportunity for my novel to reach people in cities, states, and even countries that I’d never, otherwise, have an opportunity to know. Cloning myself dozens of times over is physically impossible [a fact makes my 9th grade students grateful!], but it’s not virtually impossible!
Is this the first time you have heard of them?
Christa: For several years now, even before I ever suspected I’d be on the author side of a tour, I’ve hosted tours on my Fictionary (www.cballan.wordpress.com) blog.
What do you hope to achieve through promoting your book through a virtual book tour?
Christa: My greatest desire is that women and their families find hope in my novel, and I know that these tours can make that happen exponentially.
Do you promote online through other means? Website? Blog?
Christa: My website is another venue I use for online promoting. I also have promoted on sites like ACFW’s Fiction Finder (http://www.fictionfinder.com), Goodreads, and other .com sites.
Do you promote through Twitter and Facebook? What are your links there?
Christa: In addition to my personal Facebook page, I have one devoted to my writing: Christa Allan Readers Group. I also use Twitter. My user name there is ChristaAllan.
What are your experiences with offline booksignings? Which do you prefer – online or offline and can you give us the reasons why?
Christa: My first offline signing is still three weeks away (as I write this!). One thing for sure…I don’t think I can do offline signings in my jammies!
Here’s a fun question. If money was no object, how would you promote your book?
Christa: I’d give copies to anyone making a donation to a charity I support!
Thank you for this interview, Christa. Do you have any final words?
Christa: I appreciate everyone participating in hosting my novel and introducing it to their readers.
